Surf Sports Training Sessions

Each Saturday (weather permitting) at 8:00am there is swimming and board training. We are planning to hold additional training once the season gets underway.

Mudjimba SLSC offers our members a number of FREE Surf Sports Training Sessions to help improve your water and sand skills. These sessions are free and will be run by a Mudjimba SLSC Coach.

To participate in a Mudjimba SLSC Surf Sports Training Session you will need to be a financial member of Mudjimba Surf Life Saving Club and have signed a Mudjimba SLSC training Attendance Sign-on sheet before commencing training.

Only financial members participating in a Club endorsed training session are covered by Mudjimba SLSC insurance. All Club endorsed training sessions are posted on our Facebook members page. For further Surf Sports Training information contact the Surf Sports Officer.

What surf sports you will see at a surf life saving Carnival:

There is a wide variety of Surf Sports that you can participate in as a member of Mudjimba SLSC or just go along and watch including:

Ski Paddling, Beach Events, Surf Swimming, Surf Boats, Board Riding, Board Paddling, Ironperson Events, Rescue and Resuscitation, March Past, Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) racing, First Aid Competition, Patrol Competition, Champion Lifesaver, Marathons, Multi-disciplines and Endurance Events and Still water competition (pool).

WE URGENTLY NEED NEW OFFICIALS

For every 10 competitors we send to surf sports carnivals we need to supply 1 Official. If we don’t have any Officials Mudjimba SLSC may not be allowed to compete.

SO if you or a member of your family intends to compete in a Carnival this season and your family is not already actively providing assistance to the club (eg Age Managers, Coaches, Accredited Photographers, Water Safety, Committee Members) contact either Surf Sports Officer or Officials Liaison Officer to nominate for a new Officials course.

Prerequisites are just that you are a financial member of the club and hold a Blue Card – no athletic ability required! Contact the office Monday or Wednesday if you don’t have those prerequisites – and we can assist.

A big thank you to the members who have recently expressed interest or are currently completing modules. Thank you!

Steven Shipman is affectionately knowns as 'Shippy' and is an incredibly valuable member of Mudjimba SLSC. He selflessly spends hours each week coaching our members in the water and also holds the roles of Gear Steward and Grants Co-ordinator.

How long have you been part of Mudjimba SLSC? 5 years

What go you into SLS? I saw a mate of mine on patrol at Rainbow Bay and knew I could match it with him in the pool. If he can do it then I can too!

What do you enjoy about being part of Mudjimba SLSC? So much is produced by such a small club. I feel like I belong to something that matters.

Tell me about your achievements through the club to date. I coach board, swim and ski for the nippers, cadets and masters. I have competed at Branch, State and National Titles. I hold the roles of Gear Steward (repair guy) and Grants Co-ordinator for which I'm proud to say we have received $100,000 to date so far.

What do you like most about being a Coach at the Club? I really like seeing our members benefit from the skills passed on. Every Nippers board race on points day was won by someone I coached! Our ski team paddle like athletes!!

5 random facts about 'Shippy'

1. I have been married for 29yrs, have 2 kids and we all still like each other!

2. I won a State Title Iron Man

3. I have completed Coolangatta Gold twice

4. I have worked for over 30yrs as a Police Officer of which has mostly been in 'use of force' training.. guns, taser, wrestling etc

5. I work in Brisbane and live in Mudjimba

1. How long have you been part of Mudjimba SLSC?

I have been with the Club since 2017 (4 years).

2. What got you into Surf Lifesaving?

Like a lot of parents it is my kids that got me involved with SLS. I started by wanting to assist in the water at Nippers, I completed the SRC course so I could do Water Safety. Then I thought I'd like to compete in flags and sprints so I then went on to achieve my Bronze Medallion. This then led to becoming a patrolling member of Mudjimba SLSC.

3. What do you enjoy about being part of Mudjimba SLSC?

We chose Mudjimba SLSC because it was smaller than some of the big Clubs, and it is a family orientated Club where everyone is welcome. We had spoken to other families at the Club before joining, and from that we learnt it would be a good fit for us. We love the Nippers program run through the Club and don't think there is a more beautiful beach on the Sunshine Coast. My family feel lucky to now call Mudjimba 'Our Beach'.

4. Tell me about your achievements through the Club to date....

I'm most proud of being a patrolling member and helping keep our beach safe and enjoyable for all. I want to set a good example for my kids, and to be a role model for them. I can't think of a better way than being a volunteer Lifesaver.

On the Surf Sports side of things, I have managed to put in a few good performances on the sand with sprints, flags and relays. I've achieved gold & silver medals at State Titles and World Titles (still pinch myself over that). I also won a silver medal at the Australian Titles in flags last season. The individual medals are great but I've had the most satisfaction in the medals I have won as part of the beach relay teams, especially the gold we picked up at the World Titles in Adelaide at the end of 2018.

This season and part of last season I have taken on the role of sprints & flags Coach, I'm fairly new to coaching any sports but feel I am constantly improving and getting some confidence. It is very satisfying to see our young athletes improve their skills and grow their confidence.

5. Do you have any goals within the Club that you would like to achieve?

Yes, my main goal is to have my kids complete the Nippers program and obtain a Surf Rescue Certificate. If they can do that, then I know they will have beach safety skills and awareness for the rest of their lives.

I'm keen to continue to develop my coaching skills and help our young Nippers realise their potential.

I'd like to add to my qualifications so I can become a more complete patrol member.

Finally, an individual gold medal at the Aussies would be nice.

6. What do you like most about being a trainer with the Club?

The most satisfying thing is seeing our Nippers put their training into action at a carnival. The look on their faces when they achieve a good result is worth every minute that I put into coaching. A good result does not mean medals. Although medals are great I don't guarantee medals but I do promise everyone that if they are consistent and put in their best efforts at training they will become stronger, fitter and faster and from there anything is possible.

7. Tell me 5 random facts about Ryan!

  • QueeNZlander: yep I'm born and bred a Kiwi but the Sunshine Coast is my home and I never want that to change.
  • Business owner: my wife Bronnie and I run a small family owned property development company.
  • Rugby League Coach: I'm about to enter my 2nd season as my son's U12 rugby league team. Rugby Union is my passion tough.
  • Music: I love listening to and discovering new genres and artists (thanks Spotify), I unfortunately don't play any instruments .... yet.
  • Fitness: I'm not a fanatic but I do like to keep fit. It goes hand in hand with most things I do at the Club, and it helps me deal with the usual stresses that most of us experience with work, family and life.
